Any reason why the edge of a roof that overhangs another roof would need a gutter? The lower roof has a decent pitch, and the upper roof has an 18″ overhang. Is there a concern about backsplash on the painted wall?
I’m itching to get rid of it.

I`m having trouble picturing exactly what you`re talking about.....but if the upper roof is draining a large amount of rainfall, I certainly wouldn`t get rid of its gutter. In most cases I try and make sure that each roof has its own gutter and leader system. Regardless of how close together they are.
You got a pic...or a sketch? Just might help clear up exactly what it is you`re describing.

Here's a photo. As you can see, I'm in the midst of major rehab.
The downspout has been temporarily removed. Is the concern that the volume of water will be too much the gutters on the lower roof? The downspout empties onto the lower roof anyway.
Yes....water volume is the concern.
I`d imagine that valley made the concern even greater.

gutters on the the upper roof will help keep the lower roof from washing out...
