Got a drywall job to do an old pizza store being converted into a new store. One wall about 10′ high by 80′ long has 4×4 ceramic tile on it. Instead of framing out a new wall next to the tiled wall was thinking of laminating drywall over the tile. Thinking drywall glue with self-drilling screws going thru the tile and into the metal studs.
Ya all think this will work?

I doubt that the self drillers will cut through the tile..
maybe remove a row where ya need to screw..and don't sink them like the titanic...amd be real sure the tile is stuck good.

5/8" furring (hat) channel, over the wall, was my thought--but that's likely just me, too. That, and being able to get extensions for all of the existing electrical boxes, rather than moving them all.
I'd want to do at least some exploratory demolition to make sure the tile wasn't hung off of some other veneered wall surface--just in case. But, I'd done retail remo before--there's always a surprise.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
ya know when I first read the title of this..I thought of GWBush and Rummy in a bathroom..man, I need help..

That's the best idea but the super don't want to pay for a container..he thinks it may be too heavy...what a dope huh. How about drywall glue and then self-drilling screw thru the grout..that's if one can find the grout easily.
Maybe I'll draw little 4x4 squares on the rock and then hang it..but then, heck I'll won't get paid for the framing.
Thanks all for the advice!
