Does anyone make an aluminum “H-section joiner” for Hardie lap siding? The joiners for “masonite” type siding are too thick.
We sided a frame house with OSB boxing with Hardie 12″ lap. We used a Max siding nailer and installed with concealed nails into the studs. The butt joints in the siding also have nails at the bottom, 2″ in from the joint. All butt joints were spaced exactly 1/8″ and sealed with polyurethane caulk. Install temp was low-to-mid 60 degrees. Several of the joints have now opened to as much as 1/4″ and the polyurethane caulking has torn away from one side or the other opening a nice hole for rain.
I need some joiners that are made for the thickness and movement of Hardie. I tried searching but did not find any. Maybe it’s my searching technique.
Thanks,
Bill

We installed 5" hardiplank siding 3 to 4 years ago. Just butted the ends together with hairline gap. We put 2" by 5" pieces of coil stock scraps behind each joint and caulked. Some of the caulk has pulled away a little but the tin behind should keep any moisture from getting behind the siding. Peolple around here couldn't understand why I didn't do vinyl but I just knew it would always look cheap to me.
