Shawn, "Bluegrass" was a hardware supply company based in Lousiville KY. They have been out of buisness for at least 16 years. I don't think they ever manufactured thier own brand of tools, but may have before the turn of the century, >1900. Most of the tools they sold carried the Bluegrass logo, and what stock that was left when they went out of buisness was sold at a huge warehouse clearance. You might find one in some of the independent hardware store in the Louisville and surrounding areas.

I have owned several bluegrass hammers over the years, and other than the sentimental attachment to one that belong to my grandfather, they were no better or worse than many other brands. Of course every carpenter does his best work with his best hammer! Good luck in your quest.

    Dave

*Shawn, if you want one of the best hammers around go to (www.douglastool.com) This is the guy that designed the original Hart woody. I have used mine for 8 years and love it.I also collect hammers and I think this is truly the best design. Bob

*Interesting..... I wondered why the Woody didn't appear on Hart's web site anymore. I guess Mr. Douglas and they parted ways.Anyway, I've got a Woody. (Wait a minute... that doesn't sound just right.....)Great hammer. Best I've ever used after Estwings, Vaughns, and Plumbs. Still can't sink a 16p nail 'in one lick' like Larry Haun, but that's more of a commentary on the operator rather than the hammer.Cheers,Scott.

*I'm a pretty big fan of my own woody..but I keep breaking the tips off.....that is to say... the claws. It's happened to my second one now. Must be that Hart has turned to some cheap steel or are having problems with the heat treating process. Anyway, for $56.00, I wish it would hold together. Can't beat my Plumb. Best hammer ever. Framed, Trimed, dug holes to level ladders, built cabinets. 16 yrs. old and still looks perfect.Oop, wife says TIME TO GO!

*I dont know about a "bluegrass" but as a hammer nut has any one heard of a "Vonfang" copper barilliem hammer its the best finish hammer I have ever used, vary soft head = no bounce. I heard it was used on early submarines because it doesnt spark.

*I admit to a hammer fetish but, no bluegrass hammer. I'm really a piss poor nail beater for a guy that loves hammers. Good luck finding the hammer of your dreams. For those of you with woodys, i suggest you drop the hammer.joe d

*Autohammer. You just gotta have one. Cuts all your deck building chores in half.

*Since I'm in a position to slowly replace tools, I saw the Auto hammer on tv, then was fortunate enough to find one at a local outlet..WOW...Just cant figure out how it saves time though, it takes too much time to load sinkers, it's almost as fast to hold them the conventional way. Then there's the issue of taping lead ballast to the handle so as to be able to swing it.

*"VONFANG", sounds German. Like the soung of that. They're great industrial designers. Don't know how much nailing there would be to do on a sub though...'cause there just about all metal... aren't they. Could it be a tool for gas workers. They use copper so there are no sparks. Or could be for a machinest (sp?); they use them because the copper is softer than their jigs and dies and wont chip 'em if they need a tap.PB

*And as for hammering with ones Woody.....it's an Oriental thing!you can look it up.

*I like my Plumb 16oz. I've got the fiberglass handle and a wood handle model. Both seem to work just fine for demo, framing, trim and cabinets.Ed. Williams

*After the invention of nail guns I thought the only people who used hammers were Amish.I called Hart last year and I was told that they were having problems with the broken handles and getting them replaced. Hence, now the Hart Woody with the strong back handle. Still only lasted about 2 months but Woodcraft replaced it no questions asked. Sorry, never heard of the bluegrass.

*You might check eBay from time to time under "woodworking". The have a Bluegrass bench plane up for sale right now. I've seen several Bluegrass tools on eBay. No hammers right now though. But that can change next hour.Good Luck,Ed. Williams
