I managed to locate a hand rail bracket directly over a drywall screw beneath. The top hole on the left of a three hole bracket.
You think I should try to drill it out with a 1/16″ bit and work my way up to a bit just shy of the screw thread diameter or?
I’d move it over a hair, but figure I’ll miss the stud with one of the screws.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Remove the drywall screw.
That sounds pretty simple. I figured I would damage the texture and paint beyond the edge of the bracket if I tryed.
score the head of the screw and remove the mud over it before you pull the screw...

I think that since the dw screw is so accurately located I'd just back it out. You'll have missing mud the size of the screw head and if the bracket doesn't completely cover it it's a very minor repair.
Smile. It could be worse. You could be me working for you.
