Hanging Interior doors

| Posted in General Discussion on May 11, 2000 03:49am

OK, Guys please help me out. Have been working as a carpenter for 6 yrs.
I still have a lot to learn, BUT, my new boss wants me to hang door frames
with a 16 guage finish nailor and 2 inch nails?
this is scarin me to death , i’m havin nightmares about callbacks.
so far while hes out for supplies or somethin, i’ve been able to run around
and hide 16d finishers under the stop (like I was taught to do )
I am trying to work properly and build a good rep for myself, but I just cant see those little nails holdin a door frame in place! am I bein to critical?, should I just listen to the boss and figure its not my problem?
thanx

    Brad,

For interior door applications 16 ga finish nails should work fine. The 2"length is questionable depending on the RO size.

Normally the way I do this is I center the door and jamb in the RO. Plumb the hinge side using shims and then I shoot a nail at each hinge location. I'll shoot more there after I plumb the other side. Once I'm satisfied with the installation I go back to the hinge side and shoot 4 to five nails at each hinge location and sometimes also at the shim location on both sides.

That alone will hold the jambs in place quite well, and once you add the trim, you won't have a problem

You're not bein too critical as what you have done in the past is correct and proper. I too have been asked to do some things that have been questionable to the reputation of my work, but I've found out that the competition is so great out there, sometimes you have to give in a little.

*2" nails are, in my opinion, too short for the job. 2 1/2" out of the gun are fine. Why would YOU have nightmares about callbacks if you have a boss? Seems like that would be more like his problem.I suppose he won't let you run a nice long screw through each of the hinges either?Sorry about the tone. Haven't had my coffee yet, but Geez, can't you tell the guy you've been a carpenter for 6 years and you know how to properly hang a door? Maybe ask him about his qualifications.MD

*Makes a difference if they're hollow or solid. I usually shoot 2-1/2 in hollow. Add screws to the hinge holes on solids. A 2 is ok if your ro's are tight on hollows. Some people hang split jamb hollows nailing only the casing!

            *Not carpenters though.
