I’m restoring a mid-fifties Ross-Cortese-built house in southern California. The siding is exterior-grade, 1/4″ 4×8 sheet “Masonite” with special battens every foot. I need to find a small quantity of the hardboard to match the original, which has a very slight vertical grain. I’ve called several manufacturers: no exterior-grade material available. Cement-fiber sheet might be OK if it came in 1/4″ ( I haven’t found that either). Any suggestions?

Try the James Hardie company- they make Hardi-Board. It may be 5/16" thick, however I don't think anyone will notice 1/16 of an inch on an exterior application. Local distributors should be able to get it. It is a cement-fiber product, is well suited to exterior applications and hold paint much better than the "Masonite" products.
