My house, Hardie planks everywhere else & we want shingles in the gables (around 7 squares) The pump jacks are up & ready – we were gonna save the $ and use planks there too, but now the firm, last minute decision is shingles – no compromise. grrr.
Local lumberyard $400/sq
Lowes over $400 (I forget exactly)
Home Depot $390/sq
Why so much? We may go to cedar to save $, which seems backwards somehow.
Anyone find Hardie shingles at better prices? Knockoffs? No one in my area seems to be able to think outside the vinyl box & its super costly to do so.
I should have never shown my wife this picture.

Paint or stain finish on the shingles?
Thanks for all the advice everyone - time is of the essence and I can't find a local source for the certainteed product even if it were cheaper.
Tomorrow I will buy the cedar shingles, dip them in CWF-UV & put them up, all the while mourning the loss of low maintenance.
Then every 5 years I will cuss myself for being so cheap as I recoat my cedar.
When my ship comes in I'll hire someone to replace my old cedar w/Hardie while I am away snowmobiling in the Rockies.
Or maybe I should open a plant manufacturing fiber cement shingles at half the cost of Hardie & co...
Treat every person you meet like you will know them the rest of your life - you just might!
you should consider the cost associated with those re-stainings every 5 years, I bet if you factor in just your two you're money ahead with the hardi.

Your point is well taken, but there is no money in the budget presently - tradeoffs and compromises drive me nuts, but reality rules.

Its not Hardie, but I would use this over wood anyday of the week, we use a ton of it, & if its installed & painted in the correct manner it will last.
Price is low just as ez to install as the Hardie, the Hardie is a better product, but if money is tight I would keep it in mine & spend the $300 plus per sq. I saved on something else. At 20' away most cant tell the difference between this & Hardie.

Brian,
Certainteed makes a fiber cement product called "WeatherBoards". They carry lap siding, trim, soffit accessories, and shaped profiles (cedar shingle, etc.) much like the Hardi products. Certainteed offers paint finishes (final coat not just primer) and also "stain" finishes.
Although I'm not a builder, we've spec'd both manufacturers on various projects. I have no clue on pricing info or availability in your area.
I quickly googled it and here's what I came up with for a link:

Good luck,

Is that a Kyle Hunt Homes house? I absolutely love the look of his houses. If I could build a house (and afford it) right now, that is exactly what I would build.
Yes, that's a Kyle Hunt house. The building of that house was documented on a season of the PBS show "Hometime."
Just put them on my house. Used the Hardie Staggered......
They cost a fortune and were labor intensive trying to stay random looking.......
BUT ........they look awesome and are worth the cost......
Dan
About the same price here, last i looked I needed half a square for a small job, shame there was a 2 square min. We ended up using cedar, I would have rather used hardi, but had no use for the extra square and a half
What a great looking home.
My first plan was to Hardie Shingle my house. The design begged for it and that's what I wanted. The cost of 400/sq ft UNPAINTED put the binders on that.
