hardiplank board and batten versus clapb
Hi..I am building a lake cabin in a somehwat humid environment in north georgia mountains near a lake. I have a very nice house plan that calls for clapboard on the first story and shingles on the second story. I want to use hardiplank materials but ahve never really looked closely at the shingles. I am wondering if it is better to use the plan as designed with the clapboard and the shingles or board and batten. I have always really liked the old board and batten mountain cabins but my hsband says they will be prone to leaking and bowing even if I use hardiplank. I would like to hear some other opinions on what you guys like in terms of these 2 choices and what your preference would be. Thank you..MG

We built a large garage/shop at church using Hardiplank in the board and batton scheme. In two years, it looks like the day we put it up. The only problem with doing the job was ripping all the batton material...hardiplank does not come in 2" widths. We nailed the boards along the edges and the screwed in the battons and filled the holes. Thus, no exposed fasteners. It looks great.

I'd look at all that hardie offers... there are shingle styles and lap styles... I've seen many used on the same house with good results... I think most here given the options feel hardie is a product worth looking into... if you can find a way to make it fit your design I think you'll be happy with the long term effect of have'n to do nothing to it...

I'm outside of Atlanta, and have two outbuildings with vertical B&B hardiplank. I did have to rip the strips myself, but no biggee. I just caulked it tight, and it's been fine.

I did a large addition and ran smooth 4x9 sheets of hardiboard vertically and then did my battens in 1x3 cyprus primed before install then caulked and painted. It worked really well and I feel its as close to maintanence free as i could get.
ANDYSZ2WHY DO I HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT BEING A SOLE PROPRIETOR IS A REAL JOB?
