Folks,
I guess my post got nailed by site problems as well, so here goes again.
Hardiplank applied as it comes has a relatively thin shadow line along it’s bottom edge whereas traditional Clapboard has a much stronger, thicker shadow profile. How would you guys go about getting a stronger/thicker shadow line with Hardiplank? Tradit. Clapboard’s bottom edge is what, 1/2, 5/8ths? Whereas Hardiplank is 3/8ths, maybe? Would you run a 3/8ths thick strip along the wall and apply the hardiplank flush to it? What about cutting Hardiplank strips and laying them out along under the bottom edge? I’m imagining a not very pretty profile, and/or water shedding problems with these kinds of setup but what do I know, I’ve never tried them.
What do you folks think?
Thanks.
p.s. I know someone replied to my original post but I never got to see it, so thanks for the effort but please put it out there again, thanks.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've searched and this is the only post I've found.
We're looking to do the same as above, thicken the edge of the hadiplank with ripped strips to give it a more traditional profile. Hardi does have an "Artsitan" line that is thicker, but they don't come in the 10" reveal size.
Has anyone tried this, or have photos of a similar install?
Do you have any experience with fiber cement? I do not think what the original poster mentioned, ripping strips to build out the thickness, would look very good and doing that for a large area or an entire house would be a horrible job. You would need a clean edge so you would need to rip with a circ or table saw and the dust would make life MISERABLE. I would talk to your local hardie rep, look online at their site for the number or call in. I've never inquired about custom orders but they might do them or they'll know what some options are.
What I was thinking for the strips would be to rip in half from the narrowest profile (~6"), and use the two finished edges as the exposed side. There woudl still be a seam, but at leas it would have a finished edge.
Yes, I've contacted Hardi, and they have the Artistan line, but not in wider profiles, and no plans to run it in a 10" reveal.
