Similar experience (thank heavens NOT 5 floors worth). Lineoleum over MAPLE (kill the peasants!) floors.
First I removed the tiles, came off pretty easy w/some elbow grease. Then I used a heat gun on the tacky, tarry black stuff on the floor. When it bubbles up you can either scrape it w/a metal spatula or let it cool and chip at it.
I have also heard some people use dry ice to make it extremely brittle. It's supposed to scrape up easier that way too.
You have my sympathies and I hope it's a FABULOUS species under there.
Poor planning on your part does NOT constitute an emergency on mine.
FIR
like the rest of the house. or maybe hard pine? i havent stripped any floor yet but the window trim has all been fir.
I spent a 4th of July weekend doing this. Fir floor, black gunk. Ended up using a putty knife and some really nasty chemical stripper/adhesive remover. They didn't have anything that worked at the big box store, The stuff I found was at the little mom & pop shop. Look for something that says adhesive remover, a good respirator, comfortable kneepads, and a cute massage therapist. If it is fir, it'll look great when your done
would you beleive i have adhesive remover in the garage?...... Ill be right back......there. hot towels on one spot . adhesive reomover on another .....lighting cigarette and poof..... no more kitchen, no more problem.....
I bought a van a couple of yrs ago with logo. heat gunned the stickers off then searched for this stuff to remove residue.
thankx.
keep em comming or ill get out the wirewheel/grinder
Try WD-40. Buy the liquid in a gallon can.

would you beleive i have no wd40???
Adhesive remover. no. wet hot towles. some effectiveness.
ive been at it a week already. persistance usually gets me through.
I tried several removers, the stuff I finally found was a gel let it sit about 30 minutes and then started scrapping. Expensive stuff, like $20 something a pint, took 5 cans for 220 sft. I tried a drum sander first, 60 grit, was gummed up within 5 feet. That stuff was awful. again, best of luck to you
Some times simple hot water removes the goop. Use small towels and buckets of hot water. And if that doesn't work, the dry ice is great.
Unfortunately, I don't have advice but you do have my sympathies.
"mechanical(chisel) semi effective"
How about paying a teenager or two, give'm some chisels and have at it?
3M has a safe stripper that may work on that. Read it somewhere...
Buy a small portion.
Put it over an area you can easily reach (3' x 3'), leave it over night, scrape the residue into a trash bag, move on to the next area.
Easier than scraping.

I have also had success using water on this type of adheasive. Of course, you have to try not to soak the wood floor, but this seems to have bee doable.
Good luck!
Try some brake fluid. Takes the paint off a car, might do something to a floor. Doesn't stink too bad.
Or try Jasco sealer and adhesive remover. It causes cancer, but is non-flamable.

Its probably a good thing you have no wd-40. you'd never get the stink out. Go to a rental center and rent a mechanical floor stripper. Use your blisters wisely.
