We are going to put hardwood floors down on existing concrete floors. We know that the floor has is not all even and were wondering what would be a good base to put down. My boss believes that two layers of ply wood would be best. One layer of 5/8 and another layer of 3/4 on top equalling 1 1/4 inch. I think that 2by 4 pressure treated will do the job. We are using self levelling concrete first. The ply is around 1000 dollars compared to the cost of the 2 bys. Personally I think that the hardwood floor installer is just lazy and doenst want to land his joints on the 12 inch centers. Any suggestions would be helpfull. I realize i get paid by the hour i just want to do the right thing!

Jeff,
Your installer is not being lazy. If you've ever put down hardwood, you'd know that it comes in random lengths and it's ridiculous to think you could land on joists. You need plywood on top of your sleepers.
