I just ripped the carpet off the bedroom floor I was planning on putting birch T&G flooring and discovered it was not plywood, but hardboard(ie pressed board). We have never had squeaks or any problems in this room….so do I need to remove this…a time consuming job…or just go at it with the flooring right on top (over felt paper)….any reasons why I should not go over the p existing subfloor???….tahnks for any opinions.Rich

I'm not sure what you mean by hardboard (pressboard). Are you looking at an underlayment or subfloor? Makes a difference. Hardboard (Masonite or other MDF looking composite - usually dark brown with no discernable fibers or flakes) Particleboard (light color- looks like sawdust glued together) OSB (large wood wafers glued along a relative horizontal axis, usually light in color).
Get back w/ more info and I'll check in.
Regarding the felt paper - don't use asphalt saturated (black) felt 'tarpaper'. Bad VOC offgassing. Rather, use red rosin paper. It's 'safer' than tarpaper and will cushion the squeeks (hopoefully).
