I recently purchased some pre-finished solid hardwood flooring. It’s Brazillian cherry,3/4″ x 5″ t&g.The sample we were given by the supplier was a nice deep reddish brown, but the material that was delivered ,although Braz. Cherry, was a much lighter brown with no red in it at all.The worst part is that it matches the color of the cabinets exactly.
I called the supplier and he stated that it will darken with age and advised me to lay a bunch of it out and see how it looks. He said if I still dont like it ,he’ll take it back and we can pick out something else.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of wood.If it darkens with age, will it become redder,or just a darker brown?I’m afraid if I go ahead and install it,if the color does not change considerably,I’ll be stuck with a floor that’s the same shade as the cabinets which I think will look kind of odd. Will the cabinets(hickory) darken also and sort of keep pace with the flooring?I really liked the red in the original sample, but the real problem is I need a contrast between the floor and cabinets.
I understand it’s a natural product and a sample will never match perfectly, but this was way off. Will this stuff redden with age,or just darken a bit?

I don't know about the cabinets--Hickory is light colored, so if it matches the flooring it probably has a stain on it and won't change color much.
The flooring, if it doesn't have a stain, will change color, but I don't know to what.
If you put a few boards directly in bright sunlight it will accelerate the process. After a day or two you might be able to see the difference. With Black Cherry the color change occurs in hours or even minutes.

jimk,
Sounds reasonable to me, lot of woods change color when exposed to light. He's giving you a chance to satisfy yourself.
If you buy North American black cherry it comes with a very slight pinkish tinge, looks mostly light brown..
A few years later it's dark deep burgundy that simply cannot be dupicated with any paint. The patina of real cherry aged in sunlight is extremely desireable.. do as he suggests try it yourself.. if it doesn't darken some inside a week go buy whatever you want.
We've put down Braz. Cherry before and had part of it covered and part uncovered. The uncovered part did get much darker. This was over a few weeks.
When we uncovered everything at the completion of the project there was a very noriceable line. That was months ago and last I checked the covered section had caught up to the uncovered section and you could no longer see the line.

Any wood will darken from UV.
This almost exact same Q came up here in the past month if you want to use the search button.
Brazilian Cherry is more of a class of wood than a specific species, so there would be a large range of colouration across the board.

Wrap one end of a board in a black plastic trash bag and put the whole thing in a tanning bed for about 15 minutes. You will see quite a change.

Thanks for the replies.I have'nt had much luck with the search feature,it either comes back as no results or gives me a bunch of posts that seem to have little or nothing to do with what I'm searching for.I've laid out a box of planks and will let it sit for a while to see what happens. Not expecting anything to happen overnight. Also when you guys say it will darken,do you mean it'll get more red,or just a darker shade of brown. It's the lack of red that's disappointing. Thanks .
Cherry wood is notorious for colour change when exposed to UV. A few years ago, I purchased cherry veneer ply for some cab. doors. I had some material in my truck from my first stop, so I unloaded it so I could put the ply on the bottom. In the time it took me to juggle the material around, the cherry ply on top ( that had a door lying on it) had changed colour considerably, leaving an outline of the door. (another story there) The point is, it will darken over time. As to the final colour? Who knows. My experience, the final colour was dark brown with a reddish tinge. I know that's kinda' vague, but not to good at describing colours. If your original wood has a red tone in it, then I think its safe to say it will stay.
I don't know where you placing the cherry, but try not to use any mats or area rugs. if you do, you will get outlines. Forsure.
