i plan to refinish the oak hard wood floors in my house and also plan to eliminate as much of the floor squeeking as possible. the flooring is 40 years old and is pretty noisy when walked on.
i was planning on nailing down the 3/4″ oak flooring through the 5/8″ plywood subfloor into the joists below. Are there any other better solutions or tips to consider? thanks.

Uncle Dave,
I never had much luck with getting all the squeeks out of an old floor but I know some that have. Most use a trim head screw down through the face into the subfloor then putty up the hole. If you can get at the floor from below such as from a basement then you can draw down the offending boards with screws (make sure they are not too long). I have also known some to use wood screw and then bung the head. I don't mind the look of a bung if matched, others hate it. Regardless, expect a few holes.

if you have access to underneath the floor you could run screws up! the beauti is the screw heads won't need to be filled and you can safely sand without hitting shiners
if the subflooring is sqeaking you could use one of those pocket screw kits to screw it into the joist.
pocket screw kits?
I think the most common brand is Kreg.
they are the screws that go in at a very flat angle and are commonly used to join the edge of two panels together.
Uncle Dave, After you have tried all the fastening methods, and still have a few pesky squeaks that you can't reach well, try spraying some wd-40 on the underside decking at the joist. It will swell the wood slightly as well as lube squeaky nail. I know it sounds weird, but I have eliminated some squeaks that I could only reach with spray, and the problem solved for over 5 years. A helper stepping on the squeak above will help. Paul
