Is there an “easy” way to install hardwood floors in log cabins, I haven’t had much luck with scribes, compases etc.?

Adam,
The answer to your question is YES.But, you have to leave some room for expansion or your floor could buckle on you. Because of the humidity level changes in the summer and winter.I live in a 1830's Log Cabin in southern Indiana and I have hard wood floors in it.
You need to think about this before you put the flooring up tight against the logs.
IF you still want to do it here's how I'd scribe.
I'd use a set number away from the logs say such as 2". Set the board 2" away from the log (snap a line)
,then measure what is the farthest measurement is that's what you set your scribes to.Then you have at it.
You might have to temporally put a nail to hold it from moving while scribe so it won't move on you.
IF it were me I'd still leave a 716" or 12" around the perimeter.Have any more questions I'd be happy to answer them.
*I've installed harwood in a few cabins. I always leave an expansion joint as well. I've seen the cabin crafters use rope to cover the space. I;ve seen them use rope like I use caulking, not that I would caulk a 1/2" gap but you get the picture.
*Thank you both for the input. I had heard the idea of "rope caulk" before, (mostly as a joke), but maybe its time I start taking the idea seriously. Also, once I get them scribed, what is the prefered method of cutting them: jigsaw, drum sander, (gasp) Sawz-all?
*Does anyone have any creative idea for trimming out a tounge and groove ceiling in a new construction log home? I tried a 3" red pine log notched with a V to cover up the valley but the owner didn't go for it. If possible, I'd like to use a one piece trim. Any ideas?
*Hello Adam, I try to take the most material with a jig saw the finish up with a belt sander. As far as the expansion gap goes, you can cut a extra piece of flooring down and make a piece of trim yourself. I do not have a clue how to finish the valley without being there. If you have any more questions, let me know. Jame
