Header Size for Window on Gable Wall
Hi!
I have a short gable end on which I want to place a long set of windows. The span of gable is 28′ with a slope of about 3 1/2 :12. The ridge is about 5 feet.
Slightly off center (and not under the center), I want to place windows which require a R/O height of 61.5″: I want to use three windows, as 21.5″, 61.5″ and 21.5″ (a large picture window surrounded by two narrower Double Hungs for ventilation).
With these measurements, I can add a single 2×4 in between each window to help support the beam.
Question: under Code, can I use a pair of 2×6 with 1/2″ plywood sandwich to span this? I have to have the sill be at the 24″ win above finished floor, which would be about 1 3/8 above the joists.
Or do I need to go back to my PE and inquire about using a pair of cut-down GRade 2 1.75″ LVL beams as the header?
Please let me know.
Thanks!.

I think
If I understand correctly, the openings will not be under the peak. With a trussed roof should be no issue with the 2x6. Cut roof same thing, as long as you aren't opening the wall directly below the ridge. Good luck and be safe.

I was confused with the original post.........
and now I'm even more confused. The bank of windows seem like they are going to be near the middle of the wall....
and I've not read anything about a trussed roof.......
Am I not reading with comprehension? It's been said about me b/4.
Well, Jim said "with a
Well, Jim said "with a trussed roof" -- a qualification -- he didn't say that that's what the OP has or claimed to have.
[Hmmm... Looks like Jim deleted his post.]
Clearly, the correct answer depends on several variables that Opie did not provide. But since Opie hasn't been back with any added info, I guess we can all make whatever assumptions we want. I choose to believe that the roof is supported by Houghton F Furlong's antigravity metal Furloy, so Opie can tear out the entire gable end if he wishes.
Or...
Just size the header for the whole load, instead of using 2x6 individual headers. He is over 8' and closer to 9' for a ganged install, so just do a double 2x10 header with the 1/2" plywood. Single jack stud beneath the header on each end.
After 9" I go to dbl. 2x12 with plywood.
