does anyone know of a reliable online header calculator? I’ve got nine feet to span at the outside wall which carries nothing but the edge of a flat roof above — no wall above — and I’m wondering if a sandwich header of two 2X10’s will cut it.
thanks –

The rough rule of thumb is an inch of header depth for each foot of span. IIRC, that's assuming only roof and ceiling load, and that the distance to the bearing wall that supports the other end of that roof and ceiling is no more than 20 ft. and the header spans no more than 12 ft. But my memory isn't all that good. Never engineer anything based on less than three internet posts.... ;-)

judging purely from this two 2x10's would juuuust do it.
