I’m pricing up the TrusJoist LSL insulated headers for 2×6 walls. See them here at http://www.trusjoist.com/PDFFiles/2070.pdf
Trouble is, they cost an arm and a leg. I am being quoted $170 for a 17/6 length of the 9.25 depth size.
Why so much?

A standardized approach, quick-to-install hardware, and a simplified design make building custom casework cost-effective.

We don't see too many 2x6 walls around here, but basically you are talking $10- a foot. For a 2x4 wall, a doubled 1.75" x 9.25" LVL is around $6.50 a foot, so your price seems to be in line.
I use them when ever I can. The cost of fabricating a header added in to the cost of materials makes them all most a wash. My biggest problem is our roof loading is high enough here I can only use them for 4' or less span. I install a lot of large windows 6 to 12 feet. This requires steel headers some times especially if there are multiple floors. .
wow what kind of loads are you dealing with. Just curious as I know different climates require different things.
Why not 2x10's and 4" of foam?
$32 for 16' of 2x10 and $16 for 16' of 4" foam (two pieces 2" thick) for a price of $3/ft. I don't know how SYP compares to LSL in strength.
That would save about $110 per 16' of header.
