I’ve got 6 employees and it is getting time to get some health insurance. What kind do you guys have and how do you pay for it? Do you deduct part of the insurance from your employees? A couple of the guys have pre-existing conditions, diabetes and high blood pressure, I wonder if that is going to present any problems? I think I would like to start out with something basic just hospitalization, if there is such a thing? Just looking for ideas… Thanks for any imput. 4 have familys, 2 don’t.

I just looked into health insurance for myself. Im in New York and from what Ive found it varies greatly from state to state. Dont bother with just a major medical..hospitalization plan. For the exta 20 to 30 bucks a month you can get a real good complete health plan. I pay $180 a month and that had to be set up through my bosses framing business. On my own it would be around $250 a month. Good plan too. Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. Thats for an individual plan. Family plans cost much more. And dont expect a better deal cause you may have 6 employees...youll need many more than that for the price to come down any. Hope I was of help.
*Susan,Some years ago we had employees and hated even trying to figure out payroll. We opted for an Employee Leasing Service. Now this gets beyond your question but hang on. The advantages of an ELS were way beyond weekly checks (like a payroll service). We had access to at least 4 insurance plans and each employee could choose his/her own. Workers comp rates were less, unemploument insurance rates were less......And it only cost $15/check per week.Pluss if your a chapter S or sole proprietor you can't deduct 100% of your own health coverage (yet) but if you become an employee of the leasing company and 'lease' yourself to your company then your health coverage is expensed.....We made all employees take 'direct deposit' so we didn't have guys chasing us down Friday afternoons to get their checks...... Something that was more complicated doing our own payroll.Pluss the movie pass discounts....Advantages all around.Best thing: there was only a 30 day waiting period on pre-existing conditions on several plans. We paid 100% of the basic health coverage and let employees choose upgrades if they paid the extra cost.I wrote a Letter to Editor with more info a couple years ago in FHB but can't find the issue.Look in phone book for companies serving your area.
*hey Mike...you the same Mike Guertin with the framing article in the months FHB? Are you the guy pictured in the article. Just curious. Thanks
