We are going to build a new home and are concerned about keeping down the amount of ureaformaltahyde, especially concerning kitchen cabinets. We want as allergy free a house as possible. We will have an air to air exchange system, no carpets, and will be building a stress-skin house that does not have ureaformaltahyde in it. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Enid,
OSB is used for stress skin and I believe it contains UFD glue...I think there is a panel with drywall only for inside but I don't think it is structural (needs a post and beam frame.)
There are good books written on healthy homes...do a search at
Amazon
....
Another idea is to put several coats of poly over things like the particleboard counter bottoms and over OSB and plywood...anything made with glue...
Others hear may know much more....good luck.
Near the stream,
J

*I just finished a house for a MCS patient. She loves it.We used OSB for everything and any sheets exposed to the interior (primarily the subfloor) we prefinished with products like 'Lock-In' and 'Safe Seal' from AFM corp in CA. The formaldahyde in exterior ply and osb have the phenol blend not the urea blend.Solid pine & maple wood cabinets from Young Cabinet in Maine or NH. They came unfinished and we sealed them with one of the above products before a coat of 'Hard Seal'.Probably the most important thing we did was use a geothermal heat pump (no fossil fuels) with an air delivery system that included several filter slots. We went with a pre-filter, a good media filter and most important for VOC reduction - a 1" carbon filter. Now my client has no trouble from chemical offgassing.......
