Heat Pump Split-System Mismatch?
Hope this isn’t too simple a question-I’m replacing an old 2.5 ton heat pump in a condo I just bought, and an apparently reputable HVAC company is willing to install a replacement split system compressor and air handler, and he says that the manufacturer pairs a single size air handler with both the 2 and 2.5 ton compressors. Is this a potential mismatch that I’ve read about, or does the rating discordance need to be larger to be significant?

sounds true
It is possible that your unit uses the same size air handler with a different coil inside. I know, for instance, that Ruud does this with their 1.5 and 2 ton units.
I have a split system (1 HP & air handler for downstairs located in basement, another set in attic for second story) and due to the differences in mounting of the air handlers (1 horizontal, the other vertical,) they are not identical units; one is 1/2 ton larger than the other. This is not a problem. Go with the recommended units. Too many people overdesign their systems, which can lead to significant inefficiencies and equipment wear.
That seems to be the issue-it's a Rheem, and the coil is a 3 ton, the cooling unit a 2.5, and the air handler a unit they can use for either 2 or 2.5 ton. It is a large, seemingly reputable HVAC contractor. Thanks for your help.
