My Father always told me that the heat should be set at just above freezing and left on in our cottage through the winter to prevent cracking of the foundation.
Sinde the price of heating this unsused cottage through the winter is raising I am wondering if I can leave the heat shut off (after draining the plumbing system) through the winter without damaging the foundation.
The cottage situated in Northern Ontario is 1 story high sitting on a cement block basemnet and has a walk out basement.

I do not see how heating a building to lets say 40deg would help or hurt the foundation. keeping an even temp would affect the interior of the house .Miter joints opening ,sheet rock nail pops etc.
P.S. I have a vacation house and it's in a cold winter climate and I shut my heat in-between use never noticed any major problems
