Client wants a shelf (about 16′ (yes, feet) long, depth of a 3-ring binder) to store books, binders, and the like. Lots of heavy paper. It’s a commercial building, and I’m betting steel studs are behind the drywall. Don’t know the gauge or spacing.
What is the best way to attach shelf brackets (I know, steel screws into each stud), and will the steel studs hold up this much weight?
I’ve never done something this big with steel studs. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Pete,
I install office furniture. About half the walls I attach hanging hutches to are steel. I use

Don't know what you're using for brackets/supports, but these will hold it. very easy to use and very sturdy. I've even drilled through the stud to anchor the toggle inside of them.
Have hung a 15x96wx36h 300lb wall hutch with these, no problems.
good luck.

Like the deskguy, I've hung heavy shelving, wall display board cabs and the like. If I'm there pre drywall, then solid blocking is a must. If not, I've had success with the snapoff togglers (Hilti) and install them everytime within the steel stud. You will be looking at alot of pullout strength needed, I like the idea of the steel stud acting as a large washer.
A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.
