Help? covering asbestos shingles
I need help with how to install clapboard siding over my asbestos shingles? Is this a wise thing to do? It is a fairly flat house. I understand that I need to put 3/8 insulation board over the house then tar paper it, but how do I attach the insulation board to the house what type of nails? I have a layer of asbestos shingles then under them I have the old clapboard. I do not want to go through the hassle of removing the shingles because of cost, and I am sure the clapboard is somewhat damaged. Do I need to find the studs? How would I find the studs, could a stud finder tell the difference between clapboard and studs? How would I attach tar paper to the insulation board? Should I use tar paper or tyvek? I was told tar paper.I know how to install beveled clapboard I have installed it on newer homes but not on something like my house? Help?!

What cost is involved in removing the asbestos siding?. Why not strip it down, if it looks shady, re-sheath it and tyvek, tar paper is a pain in the arse. But if your gonna go the other way, use the plastic head 2 1/2 nails (head is about one inch in diameter) and fasten the tar paper the same time as the insulation board.
Mr Monster:
What state are you in? Sadly, you need to check this
out probably with Our Pal, the building inspector.
I have seen jobs where they put rigid insulating board
inch thick over the tiles then put the new siding over
that. To this day I remain amazed that people do this
legal or not. Every nail shot through the asbestos
siding must surely release little fibers. Small pieces
get lodged behind the new siding awaiting release
at some future time. I THINK...I said THINK...that
rules are different in each state and some allow
homeowner removal . It is the disposal and
transporting of the removed asbestos that is
regulated closely.
Awaiting further posts....
Having done hundreds of reno siding jobs, I would advise you to pull the asbestos tiles off.The extra hassles of dealing with foam and tarpaper/tyvak, not to mention your corners, will make you wish you had stripped. It will make for a better job. Furthermore:
Most asbestos disposal isn't that onerous. Usually double bags, with labels and into the landfill. It's not a poison and is dangerous only when in its friable, that means dusty, state....Like when your pounding all those nails through it.Keep it moist, wear disposable coveralls and a respirator. Close off the area.Do it right.
The rules for asbestos handling and disposal differ greatly depending whether you are doing this commercially or for your self.
I would not consider layering one more since you already have two. This is like asking how many layers of makeup will it take to amke an ugly woman acceptable when she already haas a coat of lead on her skin.
