I am planning to build rooms in an open room install with a new maple floor. The walls may be removed in a few years leaving a floor underneath.
I was warned that because the plates would be nailed into the floor, the flooring may split as it tries to expand and contract.
Can I get away with just nailing the wall to the ceiling and exterior walls?
Is there any solutions other than putting the walls in first and patching the floor once they are removed?

I've done this and found no serious problems when taking up walls later. I put down a layer or tow of rosin paper first, then used only a couple screws to fasten the plate down - about 4-6' oc. A self drilling screw is less likely to split wood than a nail and easier to remove when the time comes. Wood filler for the holes.
