]My husband and i are building a home in the northeast. We are having this on going discussion about the efficacy of vapor barriers. Good? Bad? Faced insulation? Batts with poly? His thought is to use all faced insulation. Is this enough? We have lots of builder friends and I cant seem to get a sufficiet answer to my question. I realize we are novices but would really appreciate some input
thanks

Can you give us a little bit more information?
What kind of house is it? What kind of exterior finish will it have? What wall thickness will you have? What finish will you have on the inside? What kind of heating system were you planning on installing?
Generally speaking, a properly installed vapour barrier under the interior sheating is still the best insurance. A poorly installed one isn't worth the effort to staple it to the walls.

Damn you guys are quick!--thanks for everyone's input and for the VDR correction.
Gabe-We are building a saltbox with a full basement and functional attic. It will have cedar shingles OR clapboards and sheetrock inside with a thin-slab radiant system over wood frame floors, a wood stove in the basement just in case. Hope that gives you a better idea of what its all about.
Fred and Joe--The main reason I'm asking this is because, unfortunately, WE ARE THE BUILDERS. I am fully aware that we have quite a bit to learn but I would like to do this right and after working on this project for 2 years the only recourse we are going to have is to take each other out back and beat the crap out of each other.(we have been on our way out the door as i'm sure you know) Anyway, because we dont have that builder to consult with and too many views from too many people, we thought we would have some luck here.
Fred, if I may ask a seemingly obvious question, what exactly does "seal your drywall" mean? I could hazzard a logical guess but i'd rather hear it straight from you. Along those lines, how about "ventilate your siding?" And just for good measure would you recommend an air-to-air heat exchanger?
]Thanks for being patient and for everybody's time and input.
