I sided my house with Eastern White cedar shingles. How do I replace a shingle in the middle of the course? How do I make repairs? any ideas out there?
What is the best way to preserve the shingles? I want them to mellow out to that wonderful silver-grey color I see on Cape Cod.

To replace a shingle in mid-wall, get a shingle ripper. It's a blue bar with hooks on the end for grabbing onto shingle nails you can't see. Use a flat bar (mine's a vaughn, best around I think) to loosen up the shingles around the one you want to remove, use the ripper to pull the nails, cut a new shingle to fit, and cut a little off the skinny end to fit under the next course of nails. Hard to describe, takes some practice, but give it a try and you'll figure it out.
The other trick for a top-notch job is blind nailing, slide the replacement shingle almost into place, about a 1/4" low, nail in you nails at a 45 degree angle upward, then tap the shingle home. Invisible repair. Any other way I've seen is a shortcut.
