Help !!! with Exterior of Building

| Posted in Construction Techniques on April 6, 2005 09:24am

I was wondering if anybody knows what the moulding at the top of buildings are called?  My husband and I bought a 3 flat that, at the top, should have what looks like crown moulding for the exterior, but I CANNOT find out what the proper name is for it or where to purchase it.  I know that the buildings around us that have it – theirs are not made of stone-  It looks like wood or tin – I going crazy-  I woould appreciate any info.

can you post a pic of what you have?

My guess is that it is "dentil moulding"... but that is just a wild guess, based on what i think you are describing.  In this case... a pic is worth a thousand words.

Thanks for your help. I will take this info and see if that is what I need to find this.

"Architrave" popped into my mind, but , like Rich said, dentil molding might be the word you want--dentil molding has rectangles (like teeth, hence the name). But dentil molding is more of a description of the style rather than the name of the feature

    How about "cornice"?

      How about "cornice"?

That covers a lot of building right there, rather like "parapet."

I'm thinking we need pictures of the "nearby" to go with the pics of "not there."Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

Thanks for getting back to me

          No sweat.

There's a neat "trick" in replies o nthe forum here--in the "To" box, it will pull down and give a list of potential "to" names.  One of those is "All" which addresses everyone in the thread.  It can be convenient when a bunch of us all pipe in with comments.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

I don't know, but try finding a picture of it in an architectural dictionary.

Here's an illustration from the Merriam-Webster online dictionary. The cornice is the top piece shaded grey. Dentil moulding is under the cornice and looks like grey and white stripes in the illustration.
