Hi all,
I’m you typical DIY’er and I need some advice on the tread and riser dimensions for a set of stairs I am building.
We have two exterior doors leading to a freshly laid brick patio. They are roughly 2 1/2′ above the patio. I need to know what the tread and riser dimensions should be. Any advice would be useful.
Thanks,
Chris.
PS. I live in Washington state if that is important.

Chris, are these doors swinging/sliding? Will there be a screen door if swinging? You really should have a stoop or landing if swinging door. Some would wish one if a slider. Negotiating that plate of steaks or tumbler of margaritas on a single tread aint easy. Also, you should keep that stoop only a cpl inches below the threshold so you don't have to step up and over the threshold and way down. And wider than the casings so you can be off to the side to clear the screen. Then figure the steps according to the rest of the rise. The unit run (tread) and unit rise (riser) should add up to 17 1/2" with the rise near 7". You'll need to be a little closer than "about 2 1/2 feet". Give the exact number and you'll get the answer to your question exactly. Course, with you living in Washington state, I would ask for a cpl mariners tickets to give that. Whatya say?
*Comfortable and safe rise/run is about 7/10.We generally keep landing at about 4" below the threshold so water splashing and ice/snow buildup don't cause a problem. A top landing is essential for safety. You should never have to come out a door and be immediately going down steps. You need a place to stand when openning the door in or out.6.5" risers would give you a nice step and allow for the 4" drop to landing.
