The wife and I have stipped the old wallpaper off sheetrock wall. We used a stripper and was very patient and careful. We still had some areas where a layer or layers of the paper on the sheet rock peeled back and off. None went through to the gypsum. What treatment, in particular, should we give the areas where the paper peeled? And,what treatment should we give the
whole wall surface before starting to hang the new paper?

Hey Billy. I know a Billy Bussey from Cleveland. As for your question, it sounds like noone ever primed or painted the wall before the wallpaper was first put on. Is this the case? Anyhow, you can skimcoat the bad areas with joint compound and then sand smooth and then be sure to put a few coats of paint over them or the all the walls for good measure to prevent this from happening next time. I have never used stripping additives. Just water and elbow grease.

*Pete,Ai fewcoats of paint? Actually one coat of quality primer should be sufficient, followed by an application of sizing (this is after the skimcoat repair). It does sound like you might want to do the whole room. Ii thinkthat there are primers that do not require sizing, maybe a Benjamin Moore product?Rich Beckman
*Rich,There are primers that act as sizing too such as Pro-block from Sherwin Williams. I meant to suggest two coats over the skim areas because the plaster will soak up the first coat and may not seal so well. As for the rest of the room I figure a coat over all is good seeing as to how what is there now seemed to fail during this poster's strip off.Pete Draganic
*That sounds good. Sorry if I took you too literally the first time around.Rich Beckman
*Rich,Sometimes when I'm typing off the top of my head, I fail to be as explicit as I should. No offense taken at all.Pete Draganic
*Hey Billy,Your old wallpaper had no sizing under it. If it worked correctly you would have been able to peal of the vinyl, and the soak the remaining paper and paste with a few soaking coats of wallpaper stripper. If everything is working the way it should, you should be able to strip 15 DBL rolls and prep the walls in 2 or 3 hrs. The trouble spots will be where seam sealer was used. As posted above, skim the affected areas with joint compound and sand smooth, feathering in the edges. If time is not a problem, use a wall primer followed by a coat of ready mixed sizing like or the powder sizing you mix with water. If you are in a hurry, there ares wallpaper preps that will do both operations at once. We use these on new construction frequently with great results. Any good paint and wallcovering store should be able to supply you with these products.
