Greetings all –
I recently priced clear 1×4 T&G cedar for the soffit of my new porch. $US1200.00!! (yikes)
I have a possible source for some absolutely beautiful clear, old growth straight grained hemlock in large timbers, say full 2×6 or so of manageable lenghts that I’m considering resawing and milling for T&G application here.
Questions:
The hemlock has been drying in this guy’s shed for probably 10 years so I’m not too worried about moiture content. But hemlock is known to be a bit, shall we say, squirrely over time. Is this a wise choice of wood to put on a porch ceiling. The attic space, if you will, is well ventilated.
If I go this route I’d want to finish it with a clear finish to preserve the beauty of the wood. Probably log oil(?) bein’s as it’s relatively easy to apply and provides good penetration from what I’ve been able to learn about it. It would, no doub, be wise to back prime/finish the boards with at least two coats of the log oil before it’s installed, no (?).
