I want to get a good HEPA shop vac to clean up dust after demoing walls with lead paint. I’ve looked around a little at the home improvement stores and it seems that none are sold as HEPA vacs. I’ve seen some HEPA filters that can be retrofitted into vacs, but I’ve been told that if a vacuum does not have good seals on it, a HEPA filter is worthless. Is there a good portable (I’de like to be able to climb up a ladder with it.) vac that’s made as a HEPA vac and where can I find it?

Can't help with the HEPA recomendations but try a longer hose instead of climbing a ladder with a vac. A lot safer.
OK, if I use a 30' hose, will I still get good airflow using a strong vac?
30' wow. I did maybe 20.
I have a Relient which is very similar to the Milwaukee model #8912 with redundant filtering. It also has a 15 amp motor. It's the hospital model and very quiet.
It'll pull the chrome off your truck bumber.
If you have the vac up on the ladder and drop it or the vac assists you to the floor?
The portability is going to get you stuck. I think longer hoses makes more sense as well. Cost might be a stickler too, but Festool makes some grand stuff. I believe I read them advertising that it was the thing for lead abatement. Look at http://www.festool.com and hang on to the wallet.

Spoke too soon. Just looked to double check. "For NON hazardous dust."

I have a 7 gal. WAP same as ALTO with filter bags and a filter cartridge about $200 at Sears of all places, bags can be expensive though, but its real nice not having to clean the filter all the time. As for up a ladder $400-$600 can buy a backpack unit.
