Hi,
Here I am, new again. I used to subscribe to FHB and FWW, but since I couldn’t bear to throw them out eventually quit. (still have em) I’m hoping this will be a great place to pick some mines about remodeling issues. I sometimes go to the WoodenBoat forums which are wonderful in format and as a community but specific to boats.
I’m interested in design issues, aesthetics, construction details and in finding resources for the usual and unusual materials, ideas and wisdom.
I am a joiner and technical millworker experienced in curved woodwork and a bunch of other stuff, trim carpentry etc. I am interested in doing excellent work within a reasonable budget. I have spent years remodeling our houses in order to have better places than we could afford.
We are currently (for the next 10 yrs.) fixing, updating, redesigning a 70’s style house that isn’t really our taste, but seems to have great potential. We tore out the shag carpet and put in white oak plank floors, redid the kitchen layout and installed the bare bones to be embellished later.
Now we are working to get the outside more weathertight and am currently rebuilding a garage roof deck and railing system. That is mostly going fine. We’re thinking about covering the aging T-111 plywood siding with cedar shingles.
We are also gradually working on a family camp which has needs and which we are hoping to insulate and make more energy efficient.
So hello again, I am mostly sincere and serious, unless I’m working too much and getting burned out or it’s a gorgeous day and haven’t been sailing much lately or walked on a beach enough.
Bob in East Boothbay, Me.

Hi Bob, and welcome!
PaulB
Welcome to breaktime Bob.
Last time I was in Boothbay was 2001. Beautiful area. Third time we've been there for a vacation.
Sounds like you'll be busy for a while.
This is a great place for questions, answers, and some nonsense in between! ;>)

Greetings Bob,
And welcome to BT, a place peopled by a few expert artisans, some experienced but still aspiring craftspeople (like me), a few sincere DIYers (also like me) and some "sidewalk superintendents"...self proclaimed authorities. As well as a few "others".
Sounds like you'll fit in with the first and second groups quite well. It's likely that, with your unique background, you'll be getting quite a few questions and requests for photos of your work.
The photo folder could certainly use a series on millwork so whenever you feel inclined and have the time, please begin a thread on the topic. I'd certainly like to see how specialty millwork is done and, who knows, you may bring other experts out of the...ahem...woodwork as well.
Where you're at I'd be content living in a shack with a potbelly stove .......... it's beautiful country. Who's building boats in your neck of the woods these days? Many years ago (30) I worked for Boothbay Region Boat Boatyards. If you've headed to Newcastle or Scottie on the River Rd. you've passed by the folks old place .......... brother has it now. Still miss it ......... got married and moved halfway across the country. Try to get home at least once a year for a visit to see family. Got out of the city last year which has improved my disposition somewhat ;o).

Bob,
Welcome to BT.
I'm up the road a piece near Bangor.
I second HVC's suggestion to put up some photo threads. It will help counter of of the Tavern threads.

Or something like that.
Welcome to BT.
Hello Bob! I'm down the road in Portland and work in Yarmouth. Lots of Mainers here, and folks from all over. What are you doing with your 70's style house? I'm in the same boat here....
Nice to meet ya' Bob,
Since you'll admittedly be "mostly sincere and serious" here, you should know about "the tavern" where you are free to be as insincere and frivolous as you please (within reason).
Just be advised, this place can be contagious...
