I am currently building a custom library for a client who wishes to have one section hinged as a hidden access panel. The operating panels’ dimensions will be approx. 3’x5’x13″ deep and must swing into the room the library shelving faces. The difficulty is finding hardware that will be concealed behind the stile of the shelving unit and still allow swing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Although it'll take some planning and mock-up, the Rixson pivot hinge, meant to be concealed under heavy doors, is what you want. I've made a number of pivoting librarys and stereo cabinets with their pivots, which are able to carry up to 1,500 pounds. You can reach Rixson-Firemark Inc. at 9100 West Belmont Ave., Franklin Park, Ill 60131 (416) 743-6216 and 800-457-5670. And FWW ran and article in 1990 or 1991 - look in their index somewhere on this site.
