I need assistance on correctly venting a hip roof. I’m working on a small building of 20 X 24 feet. I want to have a 6 in 12 hip roof and wonder if the ridge vent with vented soffit intake will be sufficient? We are “off the grid” and electrical ventilation is not possible.
Also, I am wondering about steel trusses. I wanted to try them on this little project to see how they are to work with. They are not as easy to get as wood trusses but lighter. I read an article in FHB 1995 that discussed building with steel. That article recommended “hat channel” be used. Is this still the case? Any suggestion would be appreciated. I am attempting to build as fire resistant as possible and wonder about roof decking. The first story of this little building is ARXX ICF (was Blumaxx at the time) which went up beautifully. The second story was planned for steel for the experience. It has taken a lot of research and I still have many questions. Should I try to frame the roof myself with the steel? There are angle clips available according to “Steel-Frame House Construction” book, I have yet to locate anyone selling them.
Thanks for any and all suggestion.

When I was in big business, I had a small (3500 sf) bank branch built for us that was all steel framing. It went together very well, and was economical. The trusses came in pre-fabbed and were fairly light and easy to erect.
My recolection of angle clips is that they are simply short pieces cut off a stick of angle iron. Like 2-3 inches long. Used as a means to weld & reinforce a joint.
Do it right, or do it twice.
