I have a small contracting business with 2 employees and am considering hiring a commissioned sales person to run leads and use their expertise to increase business. I’m wondering what is a common way to figure what this service is worth? Possibly a percentage of gross?

First question is " What do you sell?" or more to the point, "What are you going to have them sell?" Is it cabinets?, furniture?, ???
No salesperson is going to work for commission alone if you cannot produce a product that he can sell alot of. Most of the time, it is base salary plus commission.
