Hitachi 12″ SCMS Digital

Jemcon | Posted in Tools for Home Building on February 14, 2006 05:36am

I was in Lowes today and saw the new SCMS from Hitachi and that thing is massive. It has all the bells and whistles in the world on it.  If the slide can’t go all the way back the saw head slides on the rails. Has anyone else seen or used this saw? It’s impressive.

I've seen it and even tinkered around with it in the store but I dont see myself toting that monster out to a job site!

To tell you the truth, I think its a bit overboard. But who knows?

be a nice shop saw in my opinion.

if they fix that minor problem with the 45 bevel & miter thing...

        What minor problem is that???

I am very much in the need to get a saw, as my Bosch just died. I will pull the trigger in the AM...

As I recall, the 10" is the same saw, just smaller?Jake Gulick

I can't remember which direction off hand, it's been mentioned here and after confirming it in a tool store, you can not bevel 45 and miter 45 one of the directions, something on the saw head get's in the way of the fence.

If I recall correctly you could lop off a corner of the fence and make it work, but who want's to pay 650 beans for a saw only to hack into it?

Who?  Possibly me ;)   But I haven't had the "need" for a new slider yet.

It did look and feel like a nice tool, many here seem to think it must not be based on the fact it looks like a circus freak....

I have never had a problem with a Hitachi tool, though I also haven't owned any of the new ones.  I don't know anything about their 10"

There are alot of nice new saws out there.....I still love the standard 10" Hitachi with the lazer and I'd buy it again if it went today.  I like it because I never had a problem with the old standard 8 1/2" er they started it all with.  And I like the foot print size if it....never liked the larger ones......That's just me, though.  You'll do fine with a good saw purchase, just don't cheap-out, as you know.

Got the hitachi 10 last summer. Love that saw. The laser is great in the cabinet shop too. I just saw the new 12 and gotta say it looks great, but it is huge, and i'm not real sure on the accuracy of the digital readouts over time, that, and that you would need a trailer to move it to a jobsite looks like the ony drawbacks.

Yea.....It just seems over done to me .....I really like basic strong tools.....But all the pros hated autofocus for the longest time also, so time will tell.

I checked out the new Hitachi 12' digital SCMS and found that the head flex about 3/16". My 10" Hitachi has less flex, try it out for yourself.

That is ABSOLUTELY unexceptable.  Hard to believe they would build a new machine like that, the 10" w/lazer is what I use, also.  I started with the 8 1/2" single bevel, bombproof, (always used the 10 &14" Makita choppers before this), so I learned to appreciate their smaller footprint and the accuracy of their machinery.....they're both about bombproof............STILL hard to believe.

Hi there I also started with the 8 1/2 and then moved up to the 10" laser. Two great saws but really go try the new 12" and with the slides extended push and see the flex.

            Thanks

I'll do that next time I'm in Lowe's...apprectiate that observation and hearing/knowing something is not as we all would like, those things should be rock solid.  Thanks.

I have never seen one personally or tried one, but if I was going to buy a 12", I would probably want the original one they have like the 10" lazer.  Just a straight forward machine that works with a bit more capacity to it....and that smaller footprint, too (stores easier).
