There is a brand new Hitachi C10FSB dual bevel slider CMS in the shop. Just out of the box.
There is a sliding “stop” of some kind behind the fence, in line with the blade. It appears that the center plastic part of this backup piece is to be cut through with the blade, and it will function as a backup blowout preventer.
There are no instructions in the manual about cutting through this piece, or for its use. It can be slid out and fixed in position so its face is forward of the fence, which I suppose is for use whenever one has an auxiliary fence face in place.
Do we have this right? Should we run the blade right through this piece and split it?
Edit: I feel so stupid! There it is on page 13, section 1, “Before Cutting.” Yes. It is to be cut through. Nice feature!

You beat me to the answer -- I have the same saw and I like it. Now that you've cut through the plastic piece you can begin cutting the real thing. Congrats on your new tool.

I have the same sliding compound mitre saw. I called hitatchi, and they said (about 6 months ago) that you should cut through the plastic. Just double check that the saw is true and square first. Hitatchi's factory is very impressive, and it should be allright. Enjoy your saw!
