The elecritician made a lot of holes in the ceiling joists of my house while installing wires. The holes are about an inch in diameter and about an inch from the edge of the joists. See the attached picture. I’m a bit worried that they might weaken the joists since they’re too close to the edge and not far enough from the supports on both ends. How can I strengthen them? I was thinking of nailing some metal straps to the bottom of the joists where the holes are made or joining the joists and the rafters together with a piece of 2×4. I’d appreciate any ideas. Thank you very much.

they should be fine, but if your really worried you could strips to the sides of the joist's for added strenght.
hoping your ceiling doesn't fall in,

*if the hole is to close to the edge he(sparky) may have to kickplate them.
*There is a code requirement for holes in joists. If the holes do not conform to the code, sister in new joists and have the fellow put in new holes.
*holes in joists should be as close to the middle as possible so as not to interfere with the tension/compression on the top and bottom. driling holes incorrectly can turn a 2x10 into a 2x6 structurally. watch for squeaky, bouncy floors.
*If your pic is at all accurate, scale wise, pretty unlikely to be a problem, structurally.I see holes like that all of the time from years ago with no signs of structural problems - if there's a problem, splits in the joist would start at the holes.Keep an eye on them, but don't lose any sleep (and don't drive any drywall screws into them!)
*Ceiling joists? Who cares about some little holes. No problem.
*If you're worried about the holes the electrician made you're going to have a hernia when the plumber is done with the sawzall.Seriously, the holes are okay. Nail a metal strip under the ones that are within a couple of inches from the bottom so that you don't drive a drywall screw into your wires.Gabe
*Holes should follow local code and usually should be in the center third of the joist's width. Your holes seem to be close to the edge

My experience with ceilking joists is that it's really hard to find a good anchor for the come-along to haul those holes back to the center where they belong
*Generally as a rule, holes should be placed as close to the center of the stud's width and should be no bigger then 25% of the width.
