Aberdeen Home Builders Association’s 2005 Contractors Care Day project began at our last awards banquet in November of 2004. It was mentioned that there was an interest by some who wanted to donate for a BIG project. From those conversations Extreme <!—-> <!—->ROOM <!—-> Makeover Aberdeen Home Builders Style was born. We then solicited applications for a deserving family who required help on a home improvement project. We received over 125 applications and narrowed it down to a deserving family in need of a handicap accessible shower. As members began to mull over ideas, the size of the project grew from one room– to offers to do various repairs to almost every room of the home. With the increase in donations of money, materials, and vowed support the project grew in to Extreme HOME Makeover Aberdeen Home Builders Style. <!—-><!—-> <!—->

The Aberdeen Home Builders Association’s project in June 2005 was quite an accomplishment. Most of our membership participated in one way or another, plus scores of volunteers who are not part of the organization as well as people from other states.<!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
Our Chapter has approximately 125 members and nearly all of the membership contributed to this massive project. The total number of hours spent on this project exceeded 2900 man hours, in preparation and the project itself. We had 96 hours to complete the project. We started the project at <!—->5:00 pm <!—-> on June 8th and it needed to be completed by <!—->5:00 pm <!—-> June 12th because the family was returning to see what we had done to their house. It is important to note that this family had no idea as to the scale of the project until they arrived home teary eyed at <!—->5:00 pm <!—-> Sunday afternoon. <!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
In the 96 hour time frame our small army of volunteers proceeded to do the following: <!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
Striped the kitchen down to bare studs and begin to re-plumb and re-wire the entire kitchen. They sheet rocked, taped, textured, painted and installed custom built cabinets. They laid flooring, installed a full light exterior walk door, trimmed and installed new appliances. <!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
The dinning room, living room, and hallway were yet another chore. The walls were covered with 85 years of wallpaper 5 layers thick in most areas which had to be stripped before the taper could coat the walls. This in itself required a tremendous amount of man hours. Utilizing the general public and kids in need of public service projects we were able to get past this hurdle. We added a multi layer crown molding, all new Laminate wood flooring, a new steel ½ glass front door, window treatments, and new furniture including a dinning table and chairs, end tables, couch and chairs.<!—-> <!—->
<!—-> <!—->
The front bedroom also had 45 years worth of wall paper. It was 3 layers thick and all of it had to be removed before we could sheetrock, tape, texture and carpet. A custom mural was painted on the wall of the room.<!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
The old unused bathroom was a real treat. The floor was warped, mold damaged, wall papered, and had a rotted window. As you can imagine this room was also completely stripped down to the studs so that we could replace the sub floor, install new plumbing, new wiring, and finish the walls to install new wall tile. This room was turned from an unusable bath to a handicap accessible roll in shower with a new entrance from the other existing bathroom. <!—-> <!—->
<!—-> <!—->
The other bath room received a make over as well. The old vanity was removed and replaced with a handicap accessible sink with plenty of storage and better lighting. We added custom built linen cabinets to make up for the lack of storage in this bathroom. <!—-> <!—->
<!—-> <!—->
The exterior of the house received a makeover also. The house had a leaky roof with rotten and weak spots in many places. We tore off the old shingles repaired the roof boards, shingled the roof, and put new flashing on the chimney. We added new low maintenance aluminum soffits, fascia and seamless gutters. The windows were inefficient single pane windows half of which were rotten and painted shut. We ordered all new replacement vinyl windows and installed them which drastically improved efficiency of the openings. The old 4 inch lap siding needed to be replaced as well so we installed new vinyl siding and fanfold insulation. This further added to the efficiency of the home. After new landscaping and new paint to the wheel chair ramp and front porch floor, the outside of the home was complete and ready for their arrival.<!—-><!—->
<!—-> <!—->
Our chosen family couldn’t have been happier or more surprised with their “ <!—->NEW <!—->†home. It was overheard that years ago a picture was cut out from a magazine showing what the mothers “dream†home would look like, and the Home Builders unknowingly gave her just that home. The real winner here were the volunteers, contributors, and the community who pulled together to work side by side as a team to give someone something that they could only dream about. <!—-><!—->

Wow that sounds like an awesome project! I'd love to be involved in something like that some day. So, how did you organize so that every one wasn't tripping over each other?
And you Absolutely CANNOT put a story like that on here without before and after PIctures!

If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer!
Here are a few pictures
Wow, do you think you could resize some of those down a little?
They are huge!
When in doubt, get a bigger hammer!
you can't be serious with pics that size..Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->
WOW!!! What a Ride!<!----><!---->
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
Marty, he's obviously not on dial up, and probably doesn't realize how many of us old 'dinosaurs' still are....
Hey blueshound, we'd love to see the project photos, but really, a goodly number of members here are still on dial-up and anything over a hundred kb is just too long. If you can re-size those pix to about 450x325 pixels or so, and reduce the DPI to 72, they'll shrink down to 35-50 kb and we'll be able to handle it....

But it is not this day.
