My comments on electric heat in another thread, coupled with designing a water-sourcing heat pump system caused me to want to generate these numbers. They are just finished, reviewed once, and in effect for Livingston County, New York as of this date.
Costs per Btu
Wood at $45 per cord and 21500000 Btu per cord = .0002096 cents/Btu
Natural Gas at 62.5 cents per therm = .000625 cents/Btu
Propane at $1 per gallon = .0010442 cents/Btu
Water Source heat pump with C.O.P. of 4.68 and 7.321 cents per kwh = .0006859 cents/Btu
Wood Pellets at $150per ton, 8220 Btu per pound = .0009124 cents/Btu
Electric Resistance heat at 7.321 cents per kwh = .0021456 cents/Btu
Oil heat at (GUESS!!!) $1.50 per gallon .0010714 cents/ Btu
This does not include the efficency of converting this energy to heat in your house, maybe I’ll do that tomorrow.
Numbers and prices are as accurate and as current as i could find. No guarantees.
For some real humor, check out this link http://www.nyoha.org/10reasons.htm how many 75% efficient gas furnaces have you installed lately?
