Hi, I am looking to get certified for home inspection. Can anyone recommend a good program? They seem to range in price fom $600- 3000. I would obviously prefer to pay the $600, but I also want the certification to have gravitas. Any suggestions? Dave

"Certification" for home inspectors doesn't mean much - there are some HI schools and trade orgs that "certify" you. Heck, I'll certify you if you send me enough money.
I attended the Midwest Inspectors Institute in the mid 90's and thought it had a very good program.
Carson Dunlop offers a program - I don't know much about the program but CD has excellent training materials - see http://www.carsondunlop.com/Inspectors/partnership.htm
See, also: http://www.ashi.org/inspectors/training.asp
Many of the "schools" focus on marketing and the best techniques of RE agent azz kissing - I suggest looking for a school with a greater emphasis on (i) technical info and (ii) "process" info - what does an HI cover, and what doesn't get included (see, e.g, ASHI's standards of practice http://www.ashi.org/inspectors/standards/standards.asp) - what is the process etc.
ASHI is the "gold standard" of the HI trade orgs - NAHI probably # 2 - NACHI is a late comer and when it first showed up wasn't much more than a joke but may have changed since.

Dave, check with the FHA to find out what they're basic requirements are.

Warning! Be cautious when taking any framing advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, all of it is considered bottom of the barrel by Gabe. I am not to be counted amongst the worst of the worst. If you want real framing information...don't listen to me..just ask Gabe!
FHA "inspections" are pretty limited and I believe are mainly done by appraisers these days - two birds - one stone approach.
An FHA inspection is much less than a "standard" ASHI /NAHI type inspection.
