Homebrew chipseal (tar and gravel)?
Was wondering if anyone knew of a reference or source for a home done chipseal application- cold emulsion (driveway sealer?) type. I have a low traffic 16″x 75′ shoulder I wanted to coat to prevent the road runoff from eroding. . . too small a job for anyone to even give an estimate or come out. I’ve seen slurry seal also- wonder if someone makes that in a can???
Thanks. . .

I've only ever seen chip seal applied on existing asphalt pavement. It sounds like you're talking about putting right on dirt. Is that right, or have I misunderstood your message?
Yup, right on dirt (well, road base at least). A lot of the roads around here or just the shoulders, with the main part paved, were originally done like that. Stopped doing it when more houses went up and people complained about rough roads. It seems to last as long as it doesn't get much traffic. . .
Around here, they use some sort of acrylic stuff to treat the dirt roads. I don't know what it is exactly, but just gets sprayed on like paint and consolidates the road surface. Pretty much eliminates dusting and reduces washouts considerably. Has to get renewed about twice a year.
