I saw a TOH this morning where Norm was creating a workshop in a garage. He covered the ceiling with Homasote and the walls with T&G pine. I thought garage ceilings needed 5/8″ or thicker for fire retardence, with the walls also needing something comparably fire resistant. Is Homasote fireproof? Can it safely be used as a ceiling material? If so, I’ll use it in my attic because it’s much lighter than sheetrock and probably a better insulator.
I thought Homasote was basically just thick cardboard.

The last I checked, Homasote was a whole lot more expensive than drywall.
Homasote's "NCFR" product has a fire-resistant rating.

Thanks, Gene. I know it's more expensive, but honestly didn't know it was "a whole lot" more expensive. An ongoing project of mine is installing a floor in my attic; I'm carrying 2' X 8' sheets of plywood up through the pull-down stairs. Once that's finished, I'll start insulating the roof (with an airspace, of course) and putting up something to cover it. I was planning on using sheetrock, but Homasote's, to borrow a phrase, "a whole lot" lighter than sheetrock. I'm not close to being finished with the floor, so I haven't priced sheetrock or Homasote.

IIRC, I just paid close to $100.00 for 5 sheets.

Hmmm, maybe lugging sheetrock through the attic stairs doesn't sound so bad after all...Thanks.
Check just the same............
Cutting it is rather laborius too. At least with a knife it was, lottsa scoring.

used to be 4-5 bucks a sheet. Last time I bought any, I was shocked to find it the same price as 1/2" CDX.

Codes vary greatly as to what is required in a garage. About the only fer-sure is the firewall between garage and house.
Norm may have used homosote because it does have some sound deadening use.

Maybe it kills that trailing "R" sound.

You'd have to check with local code officials.
