I’m considering installing prestained cedar shingles on horizontal furring strips. The horizontal furring strips will be nailed over tarpaper that has been laid over 1/2 inch CDX sheathing. I’m using vinal windows. Basic Question: How should the furring strips be tied into or next to the windows, corners (inside and out) and door ways?
I had planned to use hollowed out 4×4 cedar trim on the outside corners, 2×2 cedar inside corners and 2×4 cedar for the window and door trim. Do I place these on the horzontal furring strips? Does David Taylor or anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks a bunch. Larry

Presupposing that the reason for the furring is to keep water penetration from damaging the back sides of the cedars, You know that water might be dirtected along the furing to the window or door openning. Therefore, give it a place to go out with flashing details rather than allowint to find a way into the house.
Do a search for rainscreen walls
