Hi all,
I just began building a fence for our horse and have encountered solid rock about 1 foot below the soil surface. At this point I’m a bit stumped as to a course of action. I tried using a rock drill and it works but it is very labor intensive. The only part that needs to have wooden fencing is about 500 feet long, across the front of our property. The rest of the fence can be metal “T” posts.
If anyone has come across this situation and has a solution other than just drilling one hole at a time please let me know.
Thanks

Around here, if he's one rock, the fence builder pours small square pads directly on grade.... maybe 18" square and 8" thick... with the post embedded in the center.
Around here on rocky ground, the old timers built a box, filled it with rocks, and attached the fence post to it (can't remember what the "box" was called). The hillsides are also laced with old stone fences. Must have been a lot of fun out there on a hot summer day with no shade carrying 50lb rocks up a 45 degree hillside... Maybe they didn't exactly remember those days as the "good old days"...
OK, you've tried a jackhammer so I guess that leave dynamite - although that probably would mean a lot more work rearranging the shattered rock to hold up the post. If the rock is smooth and flat, perhaps you could add a flat plate to the bottom of the posts and glue the plate to the rock, sort of like they do with some posts in parking areas, of course, that means that you would have to dig out the dirt overburden and clean off the rock. If you are using an electric fence, perhaps you could just use tripods to hold the wire or ribbon.
In short, have never heard of an easy way to build fence over rock...
Have fun
