Have any of you guys ever used skilled contract labor to suppliment your regular crew on a project by project basis?
I am not talking about laborers, I mean finish carpenters, plumbers, electricians?
I had a guy contact me about a company that will send a skilled , say finish trimmer to my site with tools, and they bill me an hourly wage that includes all taxes and benefits. The job and be a week or six months. When the job is over the guy leaves and that ‘s it. unless I need him or them again

It is a very expensive way to get labor. Sometimes it is necessary.
I was thinking that. But when you figure the overall cost of employees including insurance, workers comp, unemployment and all benefits it really does not look all that bad.
sounds like a temp job service.
Your relationship with them is a contractural one. They have the financial/legal relationship with the worker. Not you.
Just make sure that they provide him WC and handle the taxes, etc.

Excellence is its own reward!
I've filled in with two of those labour supply companies, Tradesmen International and CPL. Of the two CPL vetting procedure seems the better of the two. When I was running my own little shop would not have hesitated to use their services had I had a need for temp labour.
Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
Another option is the local union.
Wouldn't he then need to run a regular payroll instead of treating this as a subcontracted service? Or does the Union provide an umbrella situation sometimes?

What if he screws up? Only my employees are covered by my liability insurance. Does the temp service have liability insurance.
Of course they would cover WCB, any payroll benefits, etc.
I would think so.
Haven't done this with carpenters, etc. But in my other business they work well in skilled office & field rolls. They are the providing company's full or part time time employees and all taxes & benifits are for the providers account.
I found many of the people being provided were semi retired looking for a little extra income. But those semi's were really well qualified as they were previously fulltime workers at the profession. An indication of this in your case is that they provide their own tools. I would certainly have a prospective contract employee show up at your door with his tool set before signing a contract.
An additional benefit is it allows you to screen for new people that you may want to hire on your payroll. Watch out with this issue though many temp providers have clauses that preclude you from hireing the person directly for a specified period of time.
If you have a problem, don't just talk do something to set it right.
