There seems to be some confusion as to proper etiquette on the forum. Tim Mooney nailed it recently when he said to behave as if you were in someone’s living room. You are in someone’s living room— Taunton ’s. In case that isn’t clear, following are some excerpts from the House Rules (http://www.taunton.com/thetauntonpress/forums_hr.asp). Bold italics are my comments.
Respect, courtesy, and common sense are the guiding principles behind the House Rules, so keep those things in mind, and you’re sure to fit right in. (You won’t be getting explicit, sentence by sentence instructions on what is acceptable to post and what isn’t. Use common sense. That means don’t say anything that you wouldn’t say in front of your mother. Or in front of your 6 year old child. Or in front of your best client. On many occasions, forum members have had their best clients post here. Don’t embarrass them. Impress them with the respect and courtesy Breaktimers can show.)
While we enjoy the informal nature of the Discussions, we draw the line at language or material that is insulting, abusive, obscene, harassing, bigoted, or sexually explicit. (Implied, veiled, or sideways insults are still insults and will not be tolerated. If what you are about to post could possibly be seen as anything more than good-natured ribbing, please do not hit “post.†The other items above should be clear enough. Again, when in doubt, don’t post.)
Posting the same message more than once, or “spamming,” clutters the Discussions and is not permitted. (This includes multiple political threads of a similar nature)
By posting to any of Taunton ‘s Discussions, you also agree to abide by the complete policies and conditions set forth in the Terms of Use.
Please report violations of the House Rules or Terms of Use by writing to [email protected]. We take such violations seriously and reserve the right to suspend or terminate memberships, at our sole discretion, at any time. (Before pushing the big red button, please email a volunteer peer moderator with any issues. Excessive complaining to the administration does not help the forum.)
TERMS OF USE
Further, excerpts from the Terms of Use (http://www.taunton.com/thetauntonpress/forums_tu.asp):
You agree not to post any material or content that is obscene, indecent, harassing, threatening, libelous, abusive, bigoted or hateful… (Key words: harassing, abusive, bigoted, hateful….)

While I can't find anything wrong with the words "the" and "economy" in this post, that means it's probably some sort of cypher code for bad language. Plus his little photo shows one man's buttocks and another workers crotch. Moderators, please delete Huck's post.
Hot out west this summer? We keep hearing about el nino and the warm winter we are going to have. Is that going to screw you guys for the Olympics? How is the new subway working out?

The weather here has been very warm. I don't know about this winter, but we just got back from Whistler today and it hovered around 30C while we were there. They are sure pumping the bucks into the town. The Sea to Sky Highway is one huge construction zone the whole way.
The new Skytrain line was swamped the first day. It is going to be nice having transit to the airport. I spent over $30 getting out to Dorval last time I was in Montreal.
I understand your summer has been a bit of a washout.
Summer has been a bit a bit of a wash out but not too bad. I was working in the bush (2 hours from home) for most of the summer. Only two 20 minutes break cuz of rain. Mostly rained after hours. Back in civilization now with the family. My college gig starts up soon and the girls are back to school too. On the bright side over the hill has been hockey season starts too!
They had a blurb here on radio about Preston riding the new rails. Sounds like a great plan. I watched your ctv Tamara on Regis last week, plugged your city and the Olympics. Did the area proud.

Let's hope things turn out ok. My father lived in Montreal, and the Olympic debt from the '76 games appeared on his property taxes as a separate item until several years ago!
I really was thrilled about the Montreal games. How about the France architect, Roger Tailbert (or something like that) who designed the stadium. A tower to retract the roof that would not support itself let alone the weight of a retractable roof. For that he made 50 million. I wnet to expo in 67 but really don't remember much cuz I was little. Vancouver a hell of a travel from Montreal. Who do you cheer for when the habs come to town?

I shook hands with Jean Beliveau in '72. Nothing since has made me want to shift my allegiance.
Not even years of living out west? I got to try on one of Dave Hannnan's Stanley Cup rings a few years back. They are heavy.
Jean Beliveau is a class act. When I went to school in Ottawa we did a couple road trips to the forum. Saw the Bruins and StLouis. I remember they had good hot dogs there. I remember the street (St Catherine) was alive and buzzing all afternoon leading up to the game.

Montreal Steamies. Served in a toasted bun. I understand several of the antique machines got moved to the Forum for VIPs.
Some things, have unquestionably gotten better since then, but I don't think the character of professional athletes is one of them.
Ya you are right. I remember reading George Gillette had one brought over for his private suite. If I ever go back to the Bell Centre I know what dinner will be.

The nightcrawler: Praise for the Pool Room
By Marci Surkes
With taxes, a single steamy (read: steamaay) comes to $1.04. That’s only about a dollar more than it cost when the Montreal Pool Room served up its first frank in 1912. Not bad when you consider inflation. The Pool Room is one of this city’s great greasy institutions. It was clogging the arteries of Montrealers long before La Belle Province and LaFleur dripped their first drops of gravy over fries. At 1200 St. Laurent since day one, it has withstood the neighbourhood’s many transformations. Today it’s a rough block, often referred to as “the strip” for all the obvious reasons. Most of the storefronts south of Ste. Catherine and north of Chinatown glow with neon signs hyping hot sex. Those that don’t glow with neon signs hyping hot dogs. The Pool Room has no neon signs. What it does have is plenty of competition in the wiener market. It also has the best hot dogs on the block and arguably on any block in the city. And you don’t have to take my word for it – just ask any one of the dozens of people wolfing down dogs almost 24 hours a day. That’s right. Not only does the Pool Room boast great eats, it boasts great ‘round the clock eats. Its hours of operation are sketchy at best, but it’s safe to say that the door never closes before 4 am on the weekend. And it’s between midnight and four in the morning that the Pool Room’s late-night players are in performance. The Pool Room may neighbour the Monument National Theatre, but its productions are usually far more elaborate – and memorable. So, it’s a pool hall that also serves fast food? Not exactly. Nobody, including the mustard artist who paints my dogs can remember when the pool tables were removed, but it’s been at least 25 years. Urban legends swirl as to the reasons. Was it too rowdy? Were rival hustlers killing the french fry biz? Were the tabletops too smeared with ketchup? It’s unclear. The only remaining evidence of its former billard hall status, aside from the name, are two boarded up tables now used for counterspace in the otherwise table-free eatery. Above the seemingly endless expanses of counter are caricature poster maps of Montreal dating from the 1970s and 80s that are great indicators of how the downtown skyline developed. The fading posters are pieces of the Pool Room’s undeniable sense of Montreal self. Between two of the posters hangs a photograph of a man purported to be the diner’s first owner, Mr. Dako. He’s sorta the Pool Room’s patron saint of poutine. More than once have I seen a Pool Room pontificator engaged in animated one-sided debates with Dako’s portrait. Apparently he’s a real firecracker once you get him going… Imagine: all this, plus a hot dog, for just a little over a buck. You gotta love this city.
Cool! I thought a coke and a dog at Costco for a buck ninety nine was good.

Nope. You presented your thoughts clearly. They reflect what most of us understand as common courtesy, particularly in a public place.
I'm glad that, as one member of our newly organized group of peer moderators, you've made the effort to re-define and express all this from your point of view.

"You won't be getting explicit, sentence by sentence instructions on what is acceptable to post and what isn't."
Whcih means that what is acceptable and what isn't can change from day to day or hour to hour depending on the mood of the moderator(s).
Boss,
I think Taunton and Robyn tried to chose Mods that would be fair and not have any vendettas toward any of our participants. You have to understand that we have to use some of our own discretion; we certainly won't make up rules as we go along. It's usually clear to anyone in a thread when someone is getting out of line. Personal attacks and insults won't be tolerated. Just like a church group or the Lions Club, we can't even begin to think of all the possible violations so that we can publish a list of rules.
You and I have been around here long enough that we can say, "Remember so-and-so . . ." and share a laugh. (Hey, you DO remember the Hand Model, dont' you ?) You can probably name more than I can that needed to be banned.
We have no power. We can't close a thread for posting, we can't ban anyone. We're just the eyes and ears of Taunton. They simply can't read every thread and watch for violations. We're part of all this, and we're here often. I don't know why I was asked to serve in this capacity - at first, I refused, said I didn't have time. But I'm like you, if I checked my own logged-in time, it would probably scare me !
Greg
When I said moderator(s) I wasn't referring to you guys. I don't really consider you moderators, since you have no power to do anything.
A politician is a man who stands for what he thinks the voters will fall for.
Boss-
so far, those in power have asked us peer mods to step in before things get out of hand, and before they take any action.
A few guys didn't listen to warnings, and are gone now.
I admit I'm prejudiced in this, but I think the peer mod system is working.
so far.
I don't know if it's working or not - I wasn't debating that.I was expressing frustration with the unevenness of the "supreme moderators". The rules fluctuate regularly. Some of the reasons people have gotten warnings or have been banned were downright silly IMHO. The same posts that slide by one week get someone banned the next. Having peer mods isn't gonna change that.
The urgent sometimes crowds out the important.
I'd say that behind the scenes we have spent at least as much time advocating for forum members as we have alerting each other to potential problems.
In the past there has been unevenness with "supreme moderators," and we still don't have time to look at all the posts. Several times forum members have alerted the pm's to posts they are concerned about. Many times we've emailed forum members privately asking them to edit their post, or put a message to that effect within the thread. THAT has kept people from getting banned on several occasions already.

One of the roles of the Peer Mods is to give our input on things first. Hopefully this will end the sweeping hand of the "Supreme Mods." It also takes the pressure off of the full fledged mods who really don't have the time to cruise constantly. We know the history of and characteristics of most posters. And it does help if we can step in and send an Email that says. "Hey Bro can you ease up a bit?" Most of the time they get it. Sometimes they don't. After a few tries and gentle reminders if they don't get it then it's time to ramp it up. That's when the warnings come out or a timeout. It's all in your favor. Used to be the full time mods only caught bits and pieces. Or when they'd get a ton of complaints and just get frustrated and sweep ban everyone.
I forget the traffic stats on this site but it's pretty amazing how fast it flows. Nobody can catch it all or be fair on every call. But by being out and about we are closer to the pulse of the place then ever before. And that's why I think it will help tremendously in thwarting an unfair timeout or banning. I'm not going to say that it won't happen, but we are working on it.

I thought Sancho's ban was for a really lame reason.
If you filled a toilet bowl with water from the Bermuda triangle, would it eliminate the need to flush?
There wasn't anything lane about Sanchos ban. Sancho kept piling up the offenses. And despite two emails from me and one or two from another peer mod he kept right on doing what he was doing. He knew exactly how much rope he had. He just went about five feet farther then his alotment. He's a buddy of mine but there's nothing you can do for someone that is that determined.

Got to say, since requesting that my tavern access be eliminated (before the last big election), I've been more relaxed and content here.
I've participated in some good political debates on boards which are dedicated to that subject. The New York Times Op Ed message board is one example. Lots of very well informed, intelligent people engaged in daily topics...with a few whack jobs too.
Politics is an inflammatory deal breaker for lots of friendships. So, in a community of craftsmen/women who come together to learn and share with and from each other, should politics even be discussed?
What I miss about the tavern is the human interest stuff, real people sharing their life lessons. That's the glue of any community.
So I'd like to see politics in it's own folder here. Or I'd like to see another folder called Human Interest where politics and other contentious subjects are banned.
I'm not the first person to make this suggestion. And this isn't the first time I've made it.
Comments and opposing ideas are welcome.
You worded that perfectly.

They say, "the third time's the charm."
If I managed to get it in a better perspective this time I'm glad to hear it. I hope that it will stimulate some discussion among the powers that be.
Agreed.I miss the "family" and "social" sort of stuff that was posted in the tavern. But by reading some of the political and personal rants that people posted, I realized that several of the guys that I liked were just plain small-minded internet twits. One other thing that disappointed me was that there was a handful of guys that weren't posting or contributing to construction threads on the main forums. They were just one-trick political trolls, polluting the Tavern with their stupidity. I'm not sure how it is now as I don't go there. And sure, yeah, there's the "if you don't want to read it, then don't go there" reply. I don't want to read the drivel, so I don't go there. But it's always nice to be able to round out an internet community by going off-topic, in this case, away from construction. I just can't believe that people can be so limited in terms of not being able to participate in a well-rounded conversation. They can't debate without getting personal. They can't respect that someone might have a differing opinion and let it go at that. You either agree with them or you get hit with vitriol.<sigh>I'm sure part of it is internet anonymity. People hide behind their keyboards.
<sigh>
I'm sure part of it is internet anonymity. People hide behind their keyboards.
That's the crux of it I believe, the anonymity of cyberspace. So much idiocy or pent up aggression being expressed on line that at times it boogles the mind.
It's fairly easy to bait some people into revealing such personal limitations so there are those who play that game in forums like the tavern, because the level of debating skill isn't as high as it is on boards which are dedicated to hot topics.
Once baited and angered, the other person gets defensive and begins personal attacks, much to the amusement of the instigator.
In a more civil discussion or one where baiting tactics are recognized and ignored, the ideas discussed grow according to the experience and wisdom of the participants.
Moderators of many subject specific message boards, like BT, often decide to eliminate politics and religion as topics on their boards, even in their off topic folders.
Along with the majority of board members, I've found that to work well because there is zero devisiveness among the participants, keeping all the energy going toward sharing experiences.
There is and always will be "politics" at work, and as much as this forum is about the different skills, techniques, crafts, trades, business's, etc that go into the "building" of a "fine home", for many of us it is about "work". Politics does come into it.
I think its interesting and for sure it surprises me to learn other peoples attitudes towards politics and ethics and morality.
I hope the peer mod thing works out but I think it would have a lot more weight if the peer mods could convince the real mods to give some of the banned members a little more slack. Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me.
I miss sancho.
If Sancho had any more slack.... Well, that's just funny.
I don't know how many times you can expect to break most of the House Rules and be asked to change your approach before you find yourself no longer welcome.
I miss him nonetheless.
I don't like the idea of peer mods, they remind me of the tattletales at school or work.
Actually I think tattletales is the nice term for them.
I think if they (peer mods) had any authority or influence to keep people in then I might not think of them that way. Besides, how can you be so sure of the house rules when as Boss Hog says they are at the whim of the moderators on that day?
I don't like the idea of peer mods, they remind me of the tattletales at school or work.

Shee-it boy. Who cares what you think about how this community operates? You're just an anonymous number who's been here three months.
Yes well I am indeed anonymous, but I have been here since 2002 in one incarnation or another.
Yes well I am indeed anonymous, but I have been here since 2002 in one incarnation or another.
Thanks, that's what I was after. But it's a disguise, not an incarnation.
Well you are welcome. And you may call it whatever you wish although I make no secret of it, freely admit when asked.
Everytime I erase cookies on my computer I have trouble logging back on to breaktime. Change Internet service providers, change hard drives, its easier just to pick a new screen name.
I'm curious. Why do you play this game? I assume that it amuses you to avoid detection while being out in the open with your opinions. No harm I suppose, as long as no one takes you seriously, but it seems like a cheap thrill to me.
I've been taught to take responsibility for my thoughts, words and actions, to try to make them meaningful to me and others. It's an old time philosophical practice, to be respectful in that way, part of every religion I've encountered and other spiritual paths as well. Native American people are some of it's highest practioners.
Not meant as a lecture, to be sure, just a little brotherly love.
Peter
"Boss Hog says they are at the whim of the moderator on that day"
Boss is entitled to his opinion, but I can tell you from talking to (well, e-mailing) the mods with the power that they didn't like the way things were going either. They don't have all day to moderate BT, so when things got a little crazy, they did what they had to to bring the craziness down. Us peer mods are suppoed to be the buffer between BT and Taunton. We can e-mail someone to let them know they're getting carried away, before they might get banned, but we've also already stepped in to prevent punishment.
As far as Ron goes, its like Gunner and Mike have already said. He got plenty of chances to change his ways, and didn't. I've gone over to the Backroom, and from what he's posted there I won't miss him.
As far as Ron goes,
Which Ron? "You can't tell the players without a scorecard."
Ron = Sancho
I don't often discuss politics at work, unless it's about how to get a lower property tax assessment or some other practical matter effecting the local community.
When some yahoo tradesperson starts mouthing off at lunch on his favorite political subject, I just pick up my food and find a quieter place to sit. That works well enough here except that I miss out on some other topics which have real value.
I wasn't referring to discussing political policy at work, I was referring to how politics always seems to be present at work.
I recall a recent thread with the subject of "what could I have done differently to keep my job without beiing a suck up". Thats the kind of politics I was referring to, and how getting along here may be good practice or an outlet to help better get along at work.
Dealing with politics is a part of working. You can eat lunch somewhere else if you want to, but that may not help you to keep your job.
I wasn't referring to discussing political policy at work, I was referring to how politics always seems to be present at work.
There's several ways to approach that, I believe. It only became a concern to me when I worked on union jobs. There I had to be aware of who was part of the inner circle in our local union, as well as who the contractor's people were.
In general I tried to stay out of that stuff, altogether. Just do my job, keep a friendly demeanor and follow union protocol.
That wasn't as easy as it sounds because there was always some little soap operas going on, here and there. Guys trying to form alliances with others to make themselves feel more secure or to justify their lame attitudes.
That's what I meant about political soapboxing at lunch. It was usually about union politics and it usually came from the same guy, someone whose mouth was in motion on the job but who never spoke up at monthly union meetings. After hearing his rant once or twice, I'd either move or tell him to save it for the next meeting, depending on the weather.
I didn't know that anyone else had formally requested removal. I too, have been happier and more content. topics are also less interesting!! I find that I am on the site a LOT less, but more meaningful when on.
BTW, who are the guys/gals that have that little "red star" next to their names? I must have missed something here, (not the first time!). Are they linked to the snitch website at the White House, per chance? (hope that's not offensive!!)
At its most basic level, capitalism offers people the freedom to choose where they work and what they do … the dignity that comes with profiting from their talent and hard work. … The free-market system also provides the incentives that lead to prosperity -- the incentive to work, to innovate, to save and invest wisely, and to create jobs for others.” -President George W.
