How do I calculate ridge beam size?

| Posted in General Discussion on October 31, 2000 01:01am

*
I am putting on an 18′ deepby 34′ wide addition with a 6/12 pitch.
using 2×10’s 16″ on center.
Should I use a plywood type laminated beam, or the 2×4 type laminated beam?
The distance from the ridge to top of wall is approx. 20′
Thanks Morgan

    Much of the information needed to answer your question is missing, leading me to believe that you are in over your head. Is the ridge structural? Is the ceiling vaulted? Will there be collar ties?

    Given the appropriate specifications this would be an easy calculation that your beam supplier could probably handle. I would have it reviewed by my structural engineer and have him sign off on it anyway for two reasons, liablity and the building inspector would probably require it.

    You would be foolish to accept the advice of anonymous web surfers in this regard.

      *Tommy B is right on. We would also need info about local building codes and live load requirements. Go to a lumberyard or truss manufacturer - They should be able to steer you in the right direction.

        *Morgan Fazzary,

        Unless this ridge is fully supported down to the foundation, the answer is. . . None. The ridge is just to provide a nailing surface for the rafters (which could be nailed to each other) and is structurally not necessary.But somehow I'm sure that's not the answer you were looking for. . .

          *Joe, are you trying to start something? >>> "None. The ridge is just to provide a nailing surface for the rafters" Anyhow Morgan, is the ceiling vaulted?

            *Joe meant to add that if there are ceiling joists then the ridge is non-structural....The others are assuming that this is a vaulted area since you are toying with loads...All the beam manufacturers will take a fax of your situation and fax back to you your solution for free.near the stream and BOZO Joe, LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL aj

            * Qtrmeg,

            If I wanted to start something you'd have no need to ask.

            I think that's clear don't you?
